Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American artist and rapper. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has won an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. as a police officer. The couple divorced after Latifah turned ten. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school, and she was educated in Newark New Jersey. She was a member of the Baptist church. Latifah is an Arabic word which means "delicate and compassionate". Her aunt gave it to her at the age of eight. Latifah is an extremely tall, 5'10" girl who was on the high school basketball team. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the track. He signed Latifah and dropped her first track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
